Super Mario, the good old, red plumber with a moustache that we all know. The guy that has been in the friend zone with Princess Peach from the first moment they met, but hasn’t realized it yet and keeps saving her from Bowser (I still don’t get why Bowser is so interested in the Princess, they’re not even from the same species.) He has been in plenty of games, but right now you have to think about the style in the very first one from the 80’s.
You have to combine this basic game with one of my all time favorite games, Portal! The game where you play a captured, female test subject and you have to do a lot of logic experiments with a portal gun, while there’s an “evil” robot trying to kill motivate you to get through courses, with a lot of sarcasm and dark humor.
I love both games, but now I don’t have to choose, I can just play Mari0! It’s the old 80’s game where Mario is equipped with a portal gun. If you can’t imagine it, then watch this (somebody made a very nice teaser trailer):
Personally I like the idea of combining two games to make something unique. But in this case, the portal gun works more like a gimmick instead of reinventing the whole game. My first thought about the game “What an awesome idea!”, but once I played it, then it quickly became a bit boring because it’s exactly like the original Mario game (which I’ve already played.)
Go from castle to castle in every world, with the possibility to use secrets passages and starting over every time you die. But! The developers have made a big improvement in my eyes. You can’t save, but every time you get to a new world, then the game automatically saves. This means, once you die then you can choose which world you want to start with. I gotta say, I LOVE that possibility! Because normally I get angry from playing Mario because I can’t save and have to start over every single time I die.
A nice touch is that they’ve made a Portal map pack, where you play the game of Portal. You make experiments where Mario now is the test subject. Luckliy there isn’t any timer so you can try as much as you like without any stress. It’s really nice that you can play Portal, without the need of a lot of computer power. Now you can just play it on some small laptop whenever you go visit your grandparents.
One of the things I loved the most about Portal was not the portal gun itself, it was GLaDOS. I miss the dark sarcasm and strange stories about potatoes and cakes. Without GLaDOS, it’s just not the same. It could have been cool if they made a combination of Bowser and GLaDOS of some sort. That would really have lifted this game up to the same level as Portal.
It’s a game that you easily can pass an hour with because of all the memories and the new possibilities you can do you with the gun, but it’s not a game that can keep you up all night. It’s more a game that you can pass the time with in school during class, at work during “break time” or just when you need a break from playing all of your other games.
It’s not a game I would pay for, but then it’s a good thing it’s free! And it has also been developed, not only for Mac OS, but also Linux! So if you’re using Ubuntu, Debian, openSUSE or some other Linux distribution, then you can enjoy this game. So since it’s free then go and download it now! Have some fun of the old days, but with a touch of modern technology.
